Dorothy Lee, born in 1928, daughter of Frank and Mamie, died on December 3, 2014 at 86 years old.
Dorothy LeeOctober 16, 1928 – December 3, 2014Dorothy Wilma Lee passed away on the morning of December 3, 2014 at Luther Special Care Home in Saskatoon at the age of 86. Dorothy is survived by her nieces and nephews: Beth (Ray) Evans, Kathy Watson, Fred Farkvam, Sally (Cliff) Carlson, Gail (Glen) Veikle, Jeff (Annemarie) Lee, Lynda (Martin) Lee, and Rob (David) Lee, former sister-in-law Elsie Lee, sister-in-law Marlene Vince, and many great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Mamie Lee, her brother George Lee, sister-in-law Caroline Lee, sister Marjorie Shier, brother-in-law Max Shier, and niece Norma Shier. Dorothy was born in Watson, SK on October 16, 1928. As the eldest, Dorothy was responsible for helping to raise her younger siblings, and to cook and care for the family, in the absence of their mother. She attended Crocus Vale School, Tisdale Unit Composite High School, and City Park High School in Saskatoon. She received a Diploma in Nursing from Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert in 1952, where she worked until 1962. She returned to Saskatoon to work at Royal University Hospital, where she performed many decades of service. Dorothy became the family historian and an expert in genealogy, before digital search engines made the task so easy. She served multiple terms as President of the Saskatoon Genealogy Society, and travelled to England and Salt Lake City to search for original archival records, tracing the Lee family history back to the late 1600's. This family history was Dorothy's life's work, and her extended family benefited from these years of scholarship and research. Dorothy remained spry and athletic well into her senior years, and she would often be seen striding along the riverbank, walking miles every day. She was a loving sister to Marj, and a devoted aunt to Max and Marj's five girls, enjoying frequent visits to the farm. She loved and trusted her brother George, valuing his advice and delighting in the company of his three children. As an accomplished crafter and needle worker, Dorothy provided generous and thoughtful gifts and heirlooms to her family. Dorothy's generosity also extended to the many charities she quietly supported without the need for acknowledgement. Her years of service in nursing and to her family and community were truly selfless, and admired by those who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North. Interment of ashes will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
