On May 1, 2014, the sweet soul of our mother, Dorothy Gray, 94, of Cincinnati, Ohio, (formerly of Niceville, Fla.) passed quietly away from the cares of this earth. She died on her twin children's birthday, and we like to think she lived long enough to wish us one more Happy Birthday. She was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Danville, Ill., to Mary Myrtle Parker and Charles H. Britz. She graduated from Kankakee High School in 1938 and became an RN after studying at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville. She was married for 55 years to the late Jack K. Gray (Lt. Col. US Army) who she met while she served as an army nurse in WWII. After her husband retired from the army and settled in Niceville, Dorothy worked as a school nurse at Niceville Elementary School, and later at the new hospital in Niceville. In 1972 Dorothy and Jack retired again to Cabot, Ark., where they enjoyed their small farm and volunteered with SCAN, an agency for abused and neglected children. Dorothy came back to Niceville after her husband's death, but for the past nine years lived in Cincinnati near her daughter.Dorothy is survived by a sister (Betty, 92), three children, and six grandchildren, Dr. Ken Gray (wife, June, and their daughter, Saber) of Norman, Okla.; and her twins, Tom (wife, Donna, and their sons, Christopher, Harrison, Bradley and Adam) of Niceville, and Janine (husband, Larry, and their daughter, Laura, and son, Michael) of Cincinnati. A private funeral service will take place Friday, May 9, at TP White & Sons Funeral Home in Cincinnati. Dorothy's remains will then rest in the beautiful hills of southeast Ohio, next to those of our father, her late husband, Jack.
