Dorothy J. of Dundee Age 85, died Thursday, August 4, 2005, at The Homestead, in Penn Yan, ending her earthly life of service for others. Dorothy was born December 13, 1919 in Rock Stream, NY, the daughter of the late David and Laura Pierce Symonds. She graduated from Dundee High School in 1937 and went on to Rochester Institute of Technology, graduating in Food Administration in 1941. In June of 1961 she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Humanities from the University of Rochester. Dorothy's career in food service management for 45 years taught good food preparation to many, young and old. She started in 1941 when she was assistant manager at S.F. Iszard Co. Tea Room in Elmira. In 1947 she was cafeteria manager for Madison High School, Rochester, followed by years of college food service at Syracuse, Penn State, Fredonia and Rochester Institute of Technology. She also worked in hospital food service at Strong Memorial and at the Methodist Home in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Dorothy returned home in 1974 to help care for her mother and was school cafeteria manager at the Penn Yan schools; she retired in 1984. Dorothy was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist church wherever she lived, teaching Sunday School through the years. She was a former trustee of the Dundee United Methodist Church, mission chairperson and U.M. Women's vice president and former conference delegate. Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution GU-YA-NO-GA chapter of Yates Co. and past regent of the SHE-QUA-GAH chapter of Schuyler Co., NY. In April 2005 the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded Dorothy a certificate for 50 years of dedicated service. She is loved and will be missed by her sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Patrick Sullivan of Dundee; nephew and his wife, David and Jane Symonds of Hamilton, NY; several cousins; and many friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Howard Symonds, in 1978; and a sister, Clarissa Hinkleman, in 1999. Dorothy gave her body to the University of Rochester Medical School Anatomical Gift Program. Friends are invited to her memorial service at the Dundee United Methodist Church, Monday, August 29, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ann Hicks officiating. In lieu of flowers the family graciously requests memorial contributions be made to Dundee United Methodist Church, 35 Water Street, or the Dundee Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, 14837.
