MURPHY, Dorothy E., 87, of Avon Park, Fla., died Saturday, November 19, 2005 at Cape Coral Hospice House in Cape Coral, Fla. She was born April 8, 1918 in Mount Joy, now known as Markham, Ontario, Canada to Ira and Nellie Shank. She married the late Rev. George D. Murphy on April 8, 1941 in Detroit, Mich. She became an American citizen on December 8, 1942. Dorothy was a dedicated pastor's wife and worked with her husband in his pastorates in the Missionary Church in Michigan and Indiana. She also worked part time in various Christian bookstores in Kalamazoo and Detroit. After her husband's retirement from full time ministry, they moved to their beloved retirement home in Avon Park, Fla. She then assisted her husband for another ten years in his ministry every Sunday from November to April in the services he conducted in a large RV park. They were both snowbirds and spent their summers in Marlette, Mich., until health problems kept them in Florida all year. Dorothy is survived by her son, Dr. David (Maxine) Murphy of Otsego, Mich.; daughter, Sharon (Russell) Cook of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandson, Daniel (Jodi) Murphy of Gobles, Mich.; granddaughters, Shelley (Tim) Strickland of Kennesaw, Ga. and Shannon (Bill) Lopo of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandson, Jamie (Heather) Cook of Ellenton, Fla.; great-grandson, Aden Cook, Ellenton, Fla. and Mitchell Strickland of Kennesaw, Ga. ; great-granddaughters, Kylie, Jenna and Brooke Lopo of Cape Coral, Fla. and McKenzie Murphy of Gobles, Mich. There will be a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005 at the Community Bible Church in Avon Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Missionary Church, Inc. for their missions program, the American Bible Society or Hope Hospice of Cape Coral.
