Obituary of Doris-Violet Carter


CARTER, Doris Violet WWII Veteran Born July 9, 1910 in Liverpool County (Everton), England. Died December 20, 2008 in Ottawa, Ontario. Graduate of the School of Nursing of The Royal Victoria Hospital Montreal, Public Health Nursing in Montreal and Nursing Administration at University of Toronto. From 1940-45 Doris served as a Royal Canadian Nursing Sister in England, Algeria, Sicily, Italy and Belgium. She was Supervisor of the Public Health Nurses of The Collegiate Board of Ottawa until 1974 and a long-time active member of The Laurentian Chapter of the IODE and Knox Presbyterian Church. In 1999 her book "Never Leave Your Head Uncovered" memories of a nursing sister in WWII, was published. She is survived by her brother Donald of Perth, Ontario, several cousins and many nieces and nephews across Canada and the United States. Predeceased by her parents Thomas W. and Eva I. Carter; brothers Philip (1936), Robert (1987), William (1995) and sisters Marjorie Crousse (1966) and Eva Kingsmill (2001). Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Monday, December 29th 12 noon until Memorial Service in the Chapel at 1 p.m. Reception to follow in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. Interment of ashes will be in Woodstock, New Brunswick. Special thanks to the staff of Rideau 2 South, Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre for their loving and respectful care. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Canadian Institute for the Blind or The Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Published in the Ottawa Citizen from 12/23/2008- 12/27/2008
