Obituary of Doris-Ruth O-Neill

Richmond HillDoris Ruth O'Neill, 88, died at Hospice Savannah on September 14, 2009.Although she was born in Jersey City, N.J., her family moved to the Jersey shore when she was two years old. Her parents owned a meat market and grocery store. At the age of 17, Doris was the "delivery boy" for their customers. Growing up on the "shore" was special. After high school graduation, Doris worked for the government at Fort Monmouth in N.J. In 1943, Doris joined the Navy. She did her basic training in Georgia and was stationed at Lido Beach, Long Island, N.Y., where she was a payroll master. She and Raymond O'Neill, Jr., were married in 1946 after his discharge from the Navy. The O'Neill's purchased a wholesale plumbing business. Doris was busy raising their two children, Eileen and Raymond. During this time, she became involved in politics. She became the Democratic Committee Chairman for Middletown Township, N.J. After attending business courses at Rutgers University, she became the Purchasing Agent for the township, a position she held until she retired 17 years later. A highlight of her political career was receiving an invitation to John F. Kennedy's inauguration. She and Raymond did attend. Boating was a passion for the O'Neill's. When they retired to Florida in 1984, it had to be near water. Jensen Beach became their winter home. Summers were spent helping her daughter and husband run the Mountain Vista Campground in the Poconos, where she was able to spend time with her grandsons. Raymond, her husband of 52 years, died in 1998. She moved to Richmond Hill in 2007.Survivors include daughter, Eileen Vaughan (Ernest) of Jensen Beach, Fla.; son, Raymond J. O'Neill, III (Carol) of Midway; two grandsons, Jason and Joab Vaughan; and one brother, Stephen Blauvelt of Wall Township, N.J.A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Jensen Beach, Fla.Remembrances: Hospice Savannah, P.
