Doris O'Neill passed away on Jan. 8, 2011 in the home of her daughter, Claire Calderon, in Glendale, Calif. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Jan. 18 at St. Bede Church, 215 Foothill Blvd., LaCanada Flintridge, Calif. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 20 at the Growney Funeral Home, 1070 N. Broad St., Hillside, N.J. 07205. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, with prayers at 11 a.m., and interment following at the Cemetery of the Holy Sepulchre, East Orange, N.J. Born in Newark on Feb. 4, 1913, Mrs. O'Neill lived in Hillside for 90 years prior to moving to her daughter's home five years ago. A homemaker for most of her life, she was employed as a secretary for St. Catherine's Church in Hillside for 19 years. Mrs. O'Neill was a founder of St. Catherine's Booster Club and a member of St. Catherine's Rosary Society, the Hillside Senior Citizens, and St. Bede's Parish Council for Women. Doris was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Clifford O'Neill, in 1978; her brothers, Frank, George and John Byrne, and her sister, Claire Byrne. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Connie Byrne of Glenview, Ill., and her eight children, Richard (Patricia) of Edison, N.J.; Frank (Maurie) of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; William (Otti) of Beaver Dams, N.Y.; Claire Calderon (Marcos) of Glendale, Calif.; John of Bellingham, Wash.; Clifford (Patricia) of San Francisco, Calif.; Douglas (Beth) of Shoreline, Wash., and Kathleen of Key West, Fla. She was the loving grandmother of Richard (Mara), Susan, Brian, Jennifer (Ben) Welsh, Jennifer (Adam) Hagadone, Dan, Justin (Magda), Owen, Finian, Lily, Emily, Dylan and Mike, and great-grandmother of Kayla Kurdelski, Erin Kurdelski, Timothy, Benjamin, Dylan Hagadone, Madison Hagadone, Audrey, Emmy and Elenka. Doris also had many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your preference.
