->East Lyme - Doris Goodrich Johnson passed away peacefully on Friday, April 8, 2011, at her home in Niantic.She was born in 1922 in Middletown, the daughter of Ernest and Ethel Goodrich. She was educated in Hartford and graduated from St. Joseph's College, West Hartford, where she studied early childhood education.Doris married Jack Johnson in 1945, and moved to Niantic.Doris loved children and spent 30 years teaching young children at Niantic Center School.Doris and her husband Jack enjoyed an active lifestyle with swimming, skiing, bicycling, boating, and walking. Doris was an avid gardener, planting and caring for a beautiful garden every spring and summer. Doris also loved card games, word games, jigsaw puzzles, and crossword puzzles.She was a member of the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church where she also taught church school for young teens.Doris leaves her beloved husband, Jack; her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and David Rutherford of Waterford; son, John Johnson of Niantic; sister, Ann Goodrich of Boston; and daughter-in-law, Jane Johnson of Needham, Mass.Doris was predeceased by her son, Paul, in April of 2000.She will be missed by Sarah, Ryan, Zachary, Heather, and Todd, her much loved grandchildren. Her four great-grandchildren, Lauren, Paul, Katherine, and Sam were very special to her. She leaves lifelong friend, Ruth Witherspoon of Vermont; nephew, Chip Goodrich of Essex; as well as Bari Rutherford of Ohio and Bajji Viswanath of Colorado.A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Niantic. Interment will be in the Memorial Garden of St. John's following the service.
