Obituary of Doris Horton


HORTON, Doris Jenkins, 77, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, in Hahira, Ga. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, 1006 W. Cypress St., Tampa, with the Pastor Rev. Dr. W. James Favorite officiating. Interment will follow in Bealsville Cemetery, Bealsville, Fla. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Sam James Horton of Tampa; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheila D. Warren and Exley of Hahira, Ga; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne Clifton Horton and Wanda of Orlando; one sister and brother-in-law, Lila E. Wasson and Robert Sr. of Bedford, Mass.; five grandchildren, Exley Warren Jr., Michael Warren, Clifton Horton, Jason Horton and Erin Horton; four nephews, Alvin McKinney (Joyce), Theodore Jenkins Jr., David Jenkins and Robert Wasson Jr.; three nieces, Sandra Wasson Brown, Kathy Wasson and Margaret Jenkins; one special Christian friend, Mrs. Oretha Wright; and other sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Horton was born February 29, 19 28, to Lawyer Jenkins and Margaret Moore, and lived most of her life in Manatee and Hillsborough Counties. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts in education, and Rutgers University in 1964 with a Master of Education degree, and did post-graduate study at Virginia State University in 1956. She retired from the Manatee County school system after 36 years as an educator. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Institutional Church. She was a lifelong member of the NAACP, and National Florida Agricultural and Mechanical Alumni Association. She was also a member of the Manatee Retired Educators Association, National Council of Negro Women and the Buenos Amigos Club. Mrs. Horton was an honorary Guardsman. The remains will repose 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Wilson Funeral Home and the family will receive friends in the chapel from 6-8 p.m. Those wishing to make donations, in lieu of flowers, may make donati ons to the United Hospice Foundation, 101 Northside Drive, Building C, Valdosta, GA 31602, the American Cancer Society or the Hillsborough Branch of the NAACP. Friends are asked to assemble at the church at approximately 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. A Wilson Service
