Harris, Doris Helen PORT SAINT LUCIE, Fla. Doris Manning Harris, 87, died on September 28, 2010. Born in Cohoes, N.Y., and residing in the Troy area of upstate N.Y. for many years, she moved to Fla. in 1970, living most recently in Port St. Lucie. Devoted wife of Leonard E. Harris; beloved mother of Mrs. Cheryl (Paul) Matala, also of Port Saint Lucie, and Randall M. Harris of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She is survived by two grandchildren, Kyle (Jamie) Matala of Wake Forest, N.C., Kyra Matala of Anchorage, Alaska; and two great-grandchildren, Braden and Chase Matala. Doris and Leonard would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on November 20. Before spending most of her life as a homemaker, she worked for a number of years under Dr. Stephen Curtis, a diabetes specialist associated with the Leonard Hospital in North Troy, N.Y. She moved on to work for the John A. Manning Paper Co. in Green Island, N.Y. as a lab technician under the direction of chemists and, in particular, in the government laboratory during World War II. Two of Doris's finest assets were her attention to details and her meticulousness. She honed her abilities working in the various labs and sharpened these skills as they related to other aspects of her later life. She had a real knack for visualizing how to stage and decorate a home from just a drawn plan and the results would always be functional and appealing. She carried this talent over to her gardening and landscaping projects. They were works of art, never a leaf out of place or an emergent weed. She will also be remembered for her love of life and of animals. She cherished her pets and delighted in the Fla. wildlife she encountered during her years in the state. She had a true interest in adventure and traveling. The most memorable experiences being her trips to our national parks, the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, and her dream trip to Egypt to view Egypt's rich, archaeological treasures. Last, but not least, she was a tennis enthusiast and followed the tennis circuit with passion for many years. At Mrs. Harris' request, there will be no viewing or memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 5090 Dunn Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981, Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 SE Westmoreland Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34952, or the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Inc., 4100 SW Leighton Farm Avenue, Palm City, FL 34990. Burial arrangements by cremation are being made by All County Funeral Home and Crematory, the Treasure Coast Chapel in Stuart, FL, with future internment handled by Eternal Reefs of Decatur, Georgia.
