LUBEC - Dona Gary Davis, 61, died March 29, 2009, at a Bangor veteran's home. He was born Oct. 29, 1947, in South Hampton, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Mary (Carter) Davis. He grew up in West Hampton Beach Long Island, N.Y., later moving to Lubec in 1962, and then graduating from Lubec High School, Class of 1966. In September 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a Vietnam veteran serving as the company clerk for the 101st Airborne Division Co. E, 1st Battalion 502D Infantry. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in August 1969. He then went on to work as a coal miner in Colorado; at a print shop in Portland; a mill worker at Georgia Pacific Bleach Plant, Baileyville; a speech therapist at Lubec Consolidated School; and as a carpenter in Whiting. He was also a volunteer for e Lubec Food Pantry. He was a published author of "Full Circle, The Changing Homesteader." He was an avid reader and an enthusiastic musician. He played many instruments in the high school band, including the flugel horn, trumpet, coronet, and French horn. He also performed in the band "Sound Advice" playing guitar, drums, and as a vocalist. He loved nature, wildlife and the great outdoors; gardening, hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing and camping. His favorite stories included his back to the earth lifestyle; living in his camp for many years without power or water, surrounded by woods off the Old Cutler Road, Whiting and his many adventures while fishing ponds, streams, lakes and the ocean. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Marguerite Davis; and a sister, Barbara McGuire. He is survived by a brother, John McFadden and wife, Diane, of South Portland; a brother-in-law, Burton McGuire of Cutler; aunts, Vivian Murray of Lubec, Tillie Bauer and husband, Henry, and Mimi Carter, both of West Hampton Beach, Long Island, N.Y.; an uncle, Frederick Carter and wife, Eleanor, of Cutchogue, Long Island, N.Y.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be sadly missed by long standing friends, Cindy and Joe Morrison, and James and Kathy Jones; as well as his beloved pets, Misty and Daisey. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at West Lubec Methodist Church with a reception after.
