August 22, 2012 Dr. Dennis M. Mahoney, 64, of Bridgeport, passed away on Wednesday at his home in the loving care of his wife, Sue Wanamaker, and Hospice CNY. He was born in Lackawanna, NY, on August 7, 1948, son of John and Arline Mahoney. Dr. Mahoney was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. Always a dedicated student and grateful for his education, Dr. Mahoney graduated valedictorian from Iroquois Central High School, Class of 1966. Dr. Mahoney attended Syracuse University and was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, receiving B.S. degrees in Mathematics (1970) and Mechanical Engineering (1971), graduating first in his engineering class. He received his M.D. from Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY (1975), magna cum laude. Following internship and residency in Syracuse, as well as public health service work in Alexandria Bay, NY, and in South Dakota with the Blackfeet Nation, Dr. Mahoney began his career in anesthesiology with Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY. He most recently practiced for 23 years at Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare in Utica, NY, retiring in 2007. Dr. Mahoney was passionate about caring for others and helping those in need through troubled times. He often provided free medical care or other types of generous assistance. Dr. Mahoney's passions also included boating, running, swimming, working with his hands around the house, civil war history, his pets and enjoying time with his friends and family. He was a highly respected physician among his peers and with his hospital family for his breadth of knowledge and unsurpassed dedication to patient care. Surviving are his mother, Arline Mahoney; his wife, Sue; eight children; seven grandchildren; and three siblings, John, Paul and Carol.
