Delos-E. Wheeler, born in 1932, spouse of Betty Wheeler, son of Ernest and Norma, father of Antonia, Ny, Candace, Marilea, Holly, Dawn, Delos and Jr, died on January 8, 2013 at 80 years old.
->Wheeler, Delos E.Delos E. Wheeler, 80, of Horseheads, NY, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Delos was born in Seneca Falls, NY, November 15, 1932, to the late Ernest and Norma (Gould) Wheeler. Delos married Betty (VanAlstine) Wheeler on March 1st, 1997. She predeceased him on March 16, 2012. In service to his country, Delos enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Germany near the end of the WWII occupation. Delos transferred to the Navy to serve in Korea and Viet Nam and retired honorably after 23 years of service to our country. He was a lifetime member of the Corning VFW. Delos also retired from the Owego Foundry and then entered into his own business adventures. He was an avid bowler, serious card player, always enjoyed a good game of horseshoes, a game of pool and gardening. He also restored antique lamps. The Yankees and the Knicks were his favorites of the sports he loved so much. But above all, Delos was a wonderful, caring husband and father. He will be remembered for his witty humor and being a true friend. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him. Delos is survived by five daughters: Antonia (Vincent) Hall of Johnson City, NY; Candace (Edward) Buchanan of Corning, NY; Marilea (Trevor) Stull of Corning, NY; Holly (Roy Gilbert) Smith of Horseheads, NY; and Dawn (Clarence Stevenson) VanDusen of Corning, NY; five sons: Delos Wheeler, Jr. of Rochester, NY; Bill (Gail) Soltis of Sayre, PA; Christopher Soltis of Conklin, NY; Robert (Beth) VanDusen of Corning, NY; and Christopher (Sarra Gauss) VanDusen of Corning, NY; sister: Margaret (Frank Bensley) Morris of Owego, NY; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and Marisa Smith, care giver for the last few months of Delos' life. Delos is predeceased by his parents; wife, Betty Wheeler; brothers: Ernest, Robert, Bernard, Ivan, and Sherman Wheeler; sister, Ethel Peterson; and a grandson, Michael VanDusen. Our family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Care First, Chemung County Health and the nursing staffs for the outstanding job they did in caring for Delos. The care, comfort and compassion offered to him and our family is something we will never forget! Friends and family may call Friday, January 11, 2013 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home following calling hours. The Reverend Wayne Wheeler will officiate. Interment will be Friday in Presho Cemetery, Lindley.
