David Lee "Pork Chop" Smith, 61, Osteen, passed away December 5, 2006, at Fish Memorial Hospital, Orange City. He was formerly from Battle Creek, Mich. He was born December 28, 1944, in South Bend, Ind. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School where he excelled in swimming, setting many school records. David served for six years in the U.S. Army Airborne and Paratroopers and was stationed in Korea for 13 months. He also spent 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. David was a deputy sheriff for Calhoun County, Mich., and a police officer for the City of Battle Creek. After leaving law enforcement, David worked in the insurance industry for many years. He was a member of the FOP and the International Association of Arson Investigators. His hobbies included golf, fishing and singing/Karaoke. He is survived by his stepfather, Glen Weever, Delton, Mich., whom he considered his only father. He is also survived by his children, Charles Smith, Montgomery, Ill., and Tonya Banning, Marshall, Mich.; his four grandchildren; and his three siblings, Debbie Johnstone, Osteen, Cindy Wasson, East Leroy, Mich., and Gregory Weever, Avon, Ind. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian Weever.
