CARTER, David GilesNovember 2, 1921 - August 21, 2014Born in Nashua, N.H., Mr. Carter graduated from Princeton, class of '45. During WWII, he served as a US Diplomatic Corps courier. He earned his MA at Harvard '49, and did his doctoral work at New York University, Institute of Fine Arts. His art history career began as a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, where he met his future wife. He was curator and lecturer at the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, 1955-1959. Mr. Carter directed the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, 1959-64. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts almost doubled its exhibition space during his directorship, 1964-76. Mr. Carter was a fellow at Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University, a board president of the New Haven Museum and Historical Society, a board member of The Eli Whitney Museum, and on the Advisory Council of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. He had three one-man photography shows in his eighties. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise Belknap Carter; their children Debby, Gilles, Polly and Pamela; and eight grandchildren.
