MACLEOD, Daniel James (Danny) New Glasgow Police Commissioner, veteran Town Councillor and National Capital Commission Board Member Danny MacLeod, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer, at home at the young age of 57, with his loving wife of 35 years, Virginia, and his family by his side. Danny is survived by his devoted daughters Lisa MacLeod (Joe Varner) of Nepean, ON and Sheri Greene (Dale) of New Glasgow, NS and was beloved Buppa to two adoring grandchildren, Victoria Varner and Aiden Daniel Greene. Danny will be deeply missed by his chosen sons Chad and Chris Hale and his sisters and brothers, John (Cathy), Ena Smith (Art Mansour), Norman (Anne), Janice Fraser (Tom) and Heather MacLean (Barry) and brother in law John Stewart (Janet), Alex Stewart (Marie) and sister in law Cindy Jeans (Paul). Danny will also be missed by several nieces and nephews. Danny was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Beryl (nee Ross), and his younger brother Cedric. Danny will be remembered by his family and friends for his loyalty, kindness, big heart, good nature and a distinguished career of public service spanning three decades. Until the day he died he welcomed family and friends into his home to provide well wishers with comfort. Born in New Glasgow and a resident of Terrace Heights and formerly of Terra Nova Drive, Danny held several prominent roles in the community through his involvement in sporting, policing and waste management. At the time of his illness he was Chair of the New Glasgow Police Services Board, Regional Chair for Nova Scotia Solid Waste Management and a member of the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board. He was also a member of the Pictou District Planning Commission, the New Glasgow Recreation Committee and Shriner with the Masonic Temple. Danny was the former President of the Canadian Association of Police Boards, Chair of the Unemployment Appeals Board (Nova Scotia), member of the Solicitor General Task Force on Police Services and he had served as New Glasgows Deputy Mayor. He brought Red Friday to New Glasgow to support Pictou County Troops who are fighting for our freedom in Afghanistan. He had also served as Chair of the 1999 Canada Girls Softball Championships and Chair of the 1997 Air Canada Cup national hockey tournament. Danny was a former board member with the Aberdeen Hospital Commission, the Pictou District School Board and the Honourary Chair of Pictou County Make a Wish Foundation. Danny spent 25 years in business with Thompson and Sutherlands, Curtis Industries, Westburne/ Wosley and A and S Metals. Friends may pay their respects at Angus Funeral Home in New Glasgow on Saturday, September 1 at 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday, September 2 from 2-4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. A service celebrating Danny's life and good work will be held at the St. Andrew's "Kirk" Church New Glasgow, at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 3, with burial at the Lorne Street Cemetery to follow. A reception hosted by the Town of New Glasgow will be held to honour Danny's dedication to the community at Glasgow Square after the burial. Donations lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church operational fund, Palliative Care Society or the Aberdeen Hospital Auxiliary.
