Daniel F. Donovan, age 92, of Carleton Ave., Old Orchard Beach and South Windsor, Conn., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Conn. He was born March 6, 1910, in Biddeford, Maine, the son of Michael and Ellen (Flaherty) Donovan. He was educated in Biddeford Schools and graduated from Biddeford High School in 1928. While in high school he participated in athletics. Following high school graduation, he was employed as a bookkeeper for Marblehead Boatyard in Biddeford. As a young man, he enjoyed dancing and won many Charleston dancing championships at the Casino on the end of the Old Orchard Beach Pier. After Prohibition, he was employed by the State of Maine Liquor Commission, where he traveled the state establishing new liquor stores. He later went to work for the Saco-Lowell Shops in Biddeford, in the Finance Department. While in Saco, he was an active volunteer for Little League and the Thornton Academy Boosters. He also served as an usher for many years at Most Holy Trinity Parish. In 1957, he moved to Easley to continue his employment with Saco-Lowell Shops until his retirement in 1975, when he returned to Maine, settling in Old Orchard Beach. He moved to South Windsor three years ago to live with his daughter. He was a member of St. Margaret's Parish in Old Orchard Beach, and was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Parish in South Windsor. Eleanor A. McDonald Donovan, his wife of 59 years, died in January 1998. He was predeceased by a son, Michael P. Donovan; two brothers, James and John Donovan; and three sisters, Mary Donovan, Catherine Tarbox and Margaret Joncas. He is survived by a son, Daniel F., and his wife, Peggy Donovan, of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Ellen Molloy, and her husband, Martin, of South Windsor; four grandchildren, Susan Donovan, Michael Donovan, and his wife, Jamye, Sean Molloy, and his wife, Sheralin, and Kevin Molloy, and his wife, Bridget; five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Gabriella, Liam and Jamie Molloy, and Connor Donovan; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at St. Margaret's Church, in Old Orchard Beach. Interment will be in the family lot at St. Mary's Cemetery in Biddeford. In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make memorial donations to their local hospice organization.
