Obituary of David Armstrong

David Garvin Armstrong June 19, 1924-March 2, 2013 Genius, inventor, handyman, beautiful husband, wonderful father, loving grandfather, humanitarian, equal rights defender, jokester. Rest in peace, Papa. Your strong loving heart and your brilliant mind outlasted your frail body, but thats the way youd have wanted it, and your death was as peaceful and painless, as anyone who loved you might wish. David was raised in Berwick, Maine, where he and Constance Eschmann were childhood friends, high school sweethearts and eventually, married. He served in the Navy during WWII, during which time he pioneered radar and sonar systems. After completing his studies at Harvard University, he had a long career at Raytheon, working in radar and microwave technologies. From 1955-1984, he and Connie lived in Sudbury, Massachusetts, where they were active members of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, the Sudbury Players, and other cultural and humanitarian organizations. They retired to Brunswick Maine in 1986. David always wanted to correct anything that didnt work well, from malfunctioning appliances to unreasonable officials. With his creativity, intelligence, patience and sweet reason, he improved just about everything and everyone he encountered. He is mourned and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Connie, his daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and James Gibson, and Janet Armstrong and Gil Berke, his grandchildren Rebecca, Michael and Christi, Dane and Geneva, his great grandchildren, Jaden and Kyler, and an extended circle of dear ones who treasured him and considered him their Papa too. A private family memorial will be held on his next birthday. Arrangements are in the care of Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick ME 04011.
