->JONESBORO - Connie passed away May 2, 2013. She was born May 13, 1935, in Machias, to Merrill Wallace and Elizabeth &#x22;Bacon&#x22; Wallace.She graduate with honors from Jonesboro High School in 1952 and later married her childhood sweetheart, John L. Cox Sr., and together they raised their four children. Connie began with the U.S. Post Office as a clerk and soon earned her position as postmaster which she held until she retired, 36 years later. She provided guidance, support, advice and encouragement to many within Jonesboro and the surrounding communities. Connie was instrumental in the formation and continuity of Jonesboro Community Club, Jonesboro Swim Program, Meals on Wheels program, &#x22;Christmas for Kids&#x22; events and Jonesboro Sewing Club. She was active in 4-H and, with her husband, helped many children attend Teco Lodge during the summers. She taught Sunday school at Jonesboro Union Church and was a member of Jonesboro Grange. Connie and John were instrumental in assisting with the planning and construction of Jonesboro Elementary School in the late 1970s. Everyone who came to Connie&#x27;s post office or home was always welcome and left better for having met her. Connie was interested in history, current events, held genuine concern for the well-being of others and made sure people were aware of the resources available to them whether their needs be either medical, financial or if they just needed something to feel positive about. She believed that a person needed to have a hobby and she enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, cooking and music. Everyone will remember her delicious baked beans, yeast rolls and homemade donuts. Connie loved going to yard sales with John and they enjoyed talking with the people as much as they enjoyed the &#x27;findings.&#x27; Her home was always a safe and welcoming gathering place, especially on Christmas Eve and for Sunday dinners.Connie was predeceased by her father; mother; five brothers; two sisters; and her husband, John, passed away in January 2010. She is survived by sister, Lyla Schencks of Machias and her family; brother, Francis and wife, Claire, of Jonesboro and their family. She is also survived by her children, John Cox Jr. of Jonesboro, Jeff Cox and wife, Ruth, of Wallingford, Conn., James Sr. and wife, Joni, of Jonesboro and Janet Toth and husband, Gary, of Franklin. Connie&#x27;s grandchildren include, Beth, Donna, Cheyenne, Shelly and husband, Matt, James Jr. and wife, Jaime, Apryl and husband, David, Ryan, Rebekah, Andrew, Meredith, George, Jessica, and many other children who called her &#x22;Grammy&#x22;; and her great-grandchildren, Sandra, Mark, Zoie, Jeffrey, Ethan and Carmen. A special thank you goes to those who were there for Connie when she needed assistance.A graveside service will be held 1p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Longfellow Cemetery, Machias, where both Connie and John will be laid to rest.
