MANCHESTER -- Christine Isabel MacKenzie died on July 28, 2003 at the Equinox Terrace, after a full life and several years of declining health. Born in 1907 in Graniteville, she was the first child of Neil and Christy (Matheson) MacKenzie, both of whom were born in the Eastern Townships, PQ, Canada, of families who had emigrated from Lewis, Scotland. In 1917, her family moved to Scotstown, PQ, Canada to be close to family members and lived there until returning to Williamstown in 1924.At age 17, having graduated from high school in Canada, Christine, who was known to family and friends as “Tine,” enrolled in a teacher training course at Barre’s Spaulding High School. After a year of preparation, she was employed to teach grades one through 12 in a one-room school in Orange County. The following year she moved to Rutland to conduct a third-grade classroom and continued her education at Castleton College and the University of Vermont. Eventually earning degrees from Castleton State College in 1941 and Hofstra University in 1954, she taught in the early elementary grades in Vermont and New York, spending her summer vacations at the family home on Henry Street in Claremont, N.H. After retirement in 1967, she moved to Arlington, and lived there until taking up residence at the Equinox Terrace in 1999.In the Arlington community, she was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, a member and officer of the Red Mountain Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Arlington Garden Club and a volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Arlington Library and Fisher School.Her main interest, outside her profession, was her family. She was like a parent to her eight nieces and nephew and to her 10 great-nieces and nephews. In recent years, she became “Aunt Tine” to a great-great nephew and great-great niece. She always kept the cookie jar filled and found time to listen. She read to them, advised them, watched over them and supplied them with innumerable hand-knit mittens, hats and afghans. Her family cherished her. Christine is survived by a sister, Anne MacKenzie Wyman, Bennington Convalescent Center; a sister-in-law, Ruth Downs MacKenzie; and her nieces and nephews; Christine MacKenzie Lamphere, of Burlington; Kathryn Wyman Donald of Washington, DC; Anne Haugsrud McClaughry of Kirby; Karen Haugsrud Underhill of Arlington; Linda Wyman Parks of Burlington, Iowa; Jean MacKenzie VanBuskirk, of Appalachian, N.Y.; John Neil Haugsrud of Arlington and Kristin Haugsrud Clayton of Clarksburg, W.V. She was predeceased by a sister, Katheryn MacKenzie Haugsrud, two brothers, John Calder MacKenzie and George Matheson MacKenzie.A celebration of the life of Christine MacKenzie will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be scheduled at the family’s convenience at the Union Cemetery in Claremont, N.H.It was Christine’s wish that any contributions in her memory go to the St. James Church in Arlington.The Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.
