->MADISON -- Dr. Chester "Smitty," "Uncle Chet" Smith, age 90, passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, in Madison, following a brief illness. He was the husband of 55 years of the late Ethel L. (Lawson) Smith.Born in Provincetown, Mass., he was the son of the late Albert C. and Mertice (Caton) Smith. He was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1935, as well as a 1949 graduate of the New England College of Optometry. In that same year he opened his own business in Madison, and was there for 47 years until his retirement in 1996.Chester was a long time member of the Madison Congregational Church and served on several committees through the church. He belonged to the Lakewood Country Club in Skowhegan. He was also a member of the Kiwanis for more than 50 years and enjoyed traveling all over the world. He was a lover of animals and especially enjoyed caring for and grooming his cocker spaniels.He is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and a dear friend, Leitha Wallace of Maine. A brother, Leslie Smith, preceded him in death.A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St., Brockton, Mass. Interment will follow the service in Pine Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater, Mass.A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Madison Congregational Church, 124 Main St., Madison, ME 04950.
