Chester E. Smith LANCASTER, PA - Chester E. Smith, 87, of Lancaster, PA and formerly of Troy, NY, died of natural causes on Sat. June 21, 2014 at Manor Care, Pottsville, PA. He was the husband of Patricia H. Cummins Smith and son of the late Catherine E. Garner Smith and Chester E. Smith, Sr. A Veteran of World War II, Chester served in the U.S. Marine Corps First Division from August, 1942 to February, 1946. He saw action in the South Pacific and was in the Battle of Okinawa. Chester was a member of the City of Troy Police Department and later the New York State Police until his retirement in 1969. In addition to his wife Patricia, Chester is survived by four sons: Chester E. III, of Castroville, TX, Gary T., of Selkirk, NY, Marshall J., of Latham, NY, and Mark D., of Lancaster, PA; one daughter, Luanne C. Ferguson, of Lancaster, PA; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, William H. Smith of Tamarac, NY; and one sister, Carol H. Blair, of Troy, NY. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Place of interment will be Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
