Obituary of Chester Brown


BROWN, Chester, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.), 86, of Montgomery died on Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Long Term Hospital of Montgomery from numerous complica-tions. Services are on Thursday, June 9, 2005, 3:00 in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church with the ministerial staff of First United Methodist Church officiat-ing and Dr. Bryan McIntosh assisting. The family will receive friends in the reception hall of the church one hour prior to his fu-neral service. Graveside services and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery after the funeral. He was born in Harlan County, KY on Jan 4, 1919, and was the son of the late Char-ley and Vergie Brown. His beloved and late wife was Emma Jean Bryan Brown, also of Montgomery. Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Maureen Brown of Montgomery; his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Helen and Jim McIntosh of Dalton, Georgia; his grandchildren and their spouses, including Rachel Brown Las-siter and Frank Lassiter of Maryville, Ten-nessee; Margaret Brown Fox and Jamey Fox of Montgomery; Keith and Angie Brown of Montgomery; Dr. Bryan and Lynn McIntosh of Dalton, Georgia; Blythe McIntosh Daniel and Art Daniel of Colo-rado Springs, Colorado; great-grandchil-dren Emma Fox and Virginia Fox of Mont-gomery; Sarah McIntosh and Ann McIn-tosh of Dalton, Georgia; and Brady Lassit-er of Maryville, Tennessee. Nieces and nephew include Kay Quisenberry of Dal-las, Texas; Ric and Nancy Quisenberry of Carbondale, Colorado; Ann Brown of The Woodlands, Texas; and Mona Thomas of Fayetteville, NC; brother Levi Brown of Lexington, Kentucky; and other loving relatives and friends.Chester began his career in 1939 while at the University of Kentucky when selected as an aviation cadet. After completion of flying training at Lincoln, Nebraska; Randolph Field, Texas; and Kelly Field, Texas, he was commissioned and became an instructor stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, AL where he met Emma Jean Bryan. They married while he was the commander of the Greenville Aviation School at Ocala, FL. After return-ing briefly to Maxwell to operate a service pilot school, he was transferred to Randolph Field where he served as the sen-ior officer for instruction for all Army Air Corps primary flying schools. At the end of WWII, Chet separated from active duty and worked with the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. in Montgomery until he was recalled into military service during the Korean War. Upon his return to active duty, he first served at Maxwell and then Gunter Field in Montgomery before being sent to Germany. There he served as Commanding Officer and supervised the construction of Hahn Air Base. Subsequent assignments were in Dayton, Ohio and Mitchell Field in New York from which he relocated an ele-ment of the Continental Air Command to Robins Air Force Base, Georgia that later became the Air Force Reserve Headquar-ters. After assignments at Chateauroux Air Base, France, as Vice Commander and at Squadron Officer School at the Air Uni-versity at Maxwell, he retired from active duty in August 1968. He was active in the First United Methodist Church, Order of Daedalians, Quiet Bird-men, the Air Force Association, Montgomery Lion's Club, Montgomery Golf & Country Club, and other social clubs. He loved his family and friends well, and was cherished by many. Pallbearers include Weldon Doe, Capers Holmes, Stanley Marks, William Marks, Dee Moody, Ric Quisenberry, Douglas Sanford, Philip Sellers, and C.O. Williams, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers include the mem-bers of the Men's Wesley Bible Class at First United Methodist Church.
