WILTON - Retired U.S. Naval Commander Charles L.R. "Andy" Anderson, 83, of Wilton, died Aug. 27, 2012, at Concord Hospital, Concord. He was born in Reisterstown, Md., on Jan. 7, 1929, a son of Charles R. and Mabel (Hobbs) Anderson. Raised and educated in Maryland, he graduated from McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md., and Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., Class of 1951. Mr. Anderson's long naval career spanned 22 years having served in the Atlantic Fleet as a ship captain and management specialist. Following his military retirement, he continued as a longtime public servant with the state of New Hampshire on the Governor's Council on Energy and as director of NH Correctional Industries. Throughout his career he also taught college and graduate-level courses at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va.; Rivier College, Nashua; and Golden Gate University. He resided in Wilton for the past 18 years and formerly lived in Mont Vernon for many years. His memberships included the Army Navy Club, M.O.A.A. Military Officers Association of America and MASS Arms. Fraternally he held membership in the Clinton Lodge No. 52 F & AM, Wilton, The Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Nashua and the Bektash Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church UCC, Wilton. Mr. Anderson was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to classical music, traveling and spending time with his family. Family members include a son, John H. Anderson of Milford; a daughter, Heather A. Anderson of Waltham, Mass.; his longtime partner, Dorothy A. Wood of Wilton; mother of his children, Jessie R. Anderson of Milford; a granddaughter, Morgan Anderson of Milford; and three great-granddaughters. . SERVICES: Memorial visiting hours are Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford. A memorial service will be held Sept. 5, at 10 a.m., in the Second Congregational Church UCC, Corner of Dale & Gregg streets, Wilton. Burial with military honors will follow in South Cemetery, Lyndeborough. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Military Officers Association of America Scholarship Fund (moaa.org/scholarship fund).
