CARIBOU - Charles Henry Gilman, 89, died Dec. 19, 2009, at a Caribou health care facility after a long illness. He was born April 2, 1920, in Caribou, son of the late Charles and Eldina Nylander Gilman. Mr. Gilman was a self-employed farmer and potato grower, having farmed on the East Presque Isle Road, Caribou, for more than 60 years. Charles had a true passion for farming, as well as his John Deere and Ford tractors. He enjoyed camping, especially with his grandchildren. He also loved his trips to Bangor, as well as going to Forty Acres Restaurant in Canada for pie and coffee. John was a longtime member of Greenridge Grange. He married Ertstine Louise Perkins in 1952 and she predeceased him in 1984. He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Henry Gilman, and Randy and Kathy Gilman, all of Caribou, and Alan Gilman of Fort Fairfield; four daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Russell Johnston, and Jean and Sheldon Brooker, all of Fort Fairfield, Charlene and Troy Savoy of Brewer and Cherie and Michael Garman of Fort Fairfield; 10 grandchildren, Alaska St. Peter, Troy Dewitt, Bessie Williams, Shelley McEachern, Adam Brooker, Jessica Thibodeau, Randy Gilman Jr., Sarah Gilman, Alyssa and Michael Garman; 20 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Keith Nylander. Mr. Gilman was predeceased by three sisters, Ella Maynard, Helen Stokes and Charlene Gilman; and a grandson, Neil Dewitt. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Greenridge Cemetery at a date and time to be announced by Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou.
