Athens - Dr. Charles H. "Andy" Anderson, much beloved husband, father and friend, passed peacefully from this life on Monday, June 21, 2010. A native of Maquoketa, Iowa, he was born June 24, 1920, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Anderson Sr. A chemist by profession, he received his early education in the local Public Schools; his professional training at the University of Iowa, Purdue University and Iowa State University; and received a Ph.D. from the latter institution.He spent 17 years of his professional career as a research chemist with the Babcock & Wilcox Company, Alliance, Ohio; seven years as Manager of the Methods and Applications Division of Applied Research Laboratories of Glendale, Calif.; and ended his career as Chief in the Analytical Chemical Branch of the Environmental Research Laboratory (EPA) in Athens, Ga. He was an Emeritus Member of the American Chemical Society and a member of a number of other scientific societies. He was the author of two dozen papers and publications in the field of the Analytical Chemistry of minerals, metals and environmental problems.A veteran of WWII, Charles was trained as a meteorologist at the University of Chicago and served as a Station Weather Officer at Sioux City AFB, Iowa, and later a staff weather officer with the 93rd (B-29) Bombardment Group in Pratt, Kan.He was married in December 1946 to the late Frances Bone of Iowa, who died in November 2004. They were members of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Athens, Ga., since December 1974. He is survived by four children, Barbara Muratore, Jeffrey Anderson, JoEllen Giesbrecht (Mrs. Steve) and Julie Chapman (Mrs. Carl); seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Charles played clarinet with the Classic City Band in Athens, Ga., and was a volunteer at the local Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic facility.A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1065 Gaines School Road, Athens, Ga., on Monday, July 12, 2010, at 2 p.m., with pastors Mark Harper and Beecher Mathes officiating. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. Memorial donations may be made locally to Covenant Presbyterian Church for the Bowden Church Vocational Fund or online to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, www.rfbd.org, and to The College of the Ozarks General Fund, www.cofo.edu.A memorial website, www.charleshandersonmemorial.com, is available for those who wish to share their thoughts and memories. Dr Anderson's recently published autobiography will also be available to download from the site.
