Obituary of Charles-Garland Parker

Charles Garland Parker, 77, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born on Dec. 5, 1926, in Decatur, Ala., to the late Charles Persinger Parker and Jane Meadows Parker and was affectionately known as “Honey” to his six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He attended Moulton Heights/Morgan County and Athens College schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a Machinist’s Mate in the Pacific during World War II. After serving his country he returned to Decatur where he married Helen Ruth Pruitt, late wife of 54 years. Charles was employed by the Fruehauf Corporation in Decatur where he retired as an industrial maintenance worker in 1991. Charles was a member of Central Baptist Church in Decatur for 48 years where he enjoyed singing in the church choir and performing in various quartets. After moving to the Surrey Hills area of Oklahoma City in 1995, Charles and Helen Ruth joined Surrey Hills Baptist Church where he also sang in the choir and was president of his Sunday school class. He enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, dabbling in gardening, feeding the birds and squirrels, traveling, fishing and visiting with family and friends. He will always be remembered for his ability to make people laugh, his loving ways, and his jolly “I-can-fix-it” attitude. He was a marshal at The Golf Club at Surrey Hills for seven plus years and had many hats to prove it. He had a way with people that will be remembered and respected and always had a story that would relate to every situation. His long southern drawl was his trademark. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one son-in-law, Lanny L. Scroggins of Oklahoma City. Survivors include sisters, Betty June Parker and husband Dr. Franklin Parker of Pleasant Hill, Tenn., Letha Nan Conrad and husband John of Sedona, Ariz., Jo Ann Weber and husband George of Sparta, Tenn.; three children, Cheryl L. Scroggins of Yukon, Okla., the Rev. Richard G. Parker and wife Cindy of Perry, Ga., Dr. Gregory B. Parker and wife Lori of Murfreesboro, N.C.; six grandchildren, Bradley D. Parker of Murfreesboro, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Kaleigh Lynette Scroggins of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews. There are also many relatives in the Decatur area who will miss him greatly, including his sister-in-law, Marie Watkins; brother-in-law, Rev. J. Pat Brock and many cousins. Brother-in-law, Robert H. Pruitt and wife Estelle of Topeka, Kan. will also remember him fondly. Visitation in Oklahoma City was Tuesday, July 27, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services were to be today, July 28, 2004, at Surrey Hills Baptist Church, 12421 N. Mustang Road, (NW Expressway and Mustang Rd.), Yukon, Okla.
