Charles E. Hook Charles E. Hook, sculptor and professor of art at Florida State University, died of cancer on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2008, at his home in Wakulla County, Fla. Charles Hook was born October 9, 1948, in Paducah, Ky., to Evelyn A. and Harold S. Hook. He graduated from Heath High School in Paducah, studied architecture and sculpture at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and received his Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis.He taught sculpture at Heron School of Art in Indianapolis and was an assistant professor at the University of Kansas in Wichita. Charles came to Florida State University in 1980. He was known internationally for his cast-iron program at FSU and took that knowledge abroad with workshops in places such as Wales, Peru and Bosnia.He was known for creating large-scale outdoor sculptures for more than 30 years. An exhibit of a large outdoor sculpture is open now near the marina in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Charles' work can be seen in Tallahassee at the Premier Health and Fitness Center, at the Data Center in Innovation Park, on the campus of TCC and in the Sculpture Garden at Railroad Square, which was recently dedicated the Charles Hook Sculpture Garden at Railroad Square.He is survived by his wife, Deborah La Grasse (who is also a sculptor and teaches in the School of Architecture at Florida A&M University); his two daughters, Julia Hook of New York and Cayce Hook of Tallahassee; his mother, Evelyn Hook; a brother, Alan Hook (Mary) of Paducah; two sisters, Wilma Romatz (Dave) of Saginaw, Mich., and Sherri Mason of Columbus, Tenn.; and his mother-in-law, Helen La Grasse of Tallahassee.He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hook, Paducah, and his father-in-law, Frank J. La Grasse of Gainesville, Fla. The family will have a Remembrance for family and friends of Charles beside the water garden of TD and Kathi Giddings in Wakulla County at 4 p.m. Easter Sunday. A public memorial for Charles Hook will be in October 2008 with a retrospective solo exhibition at The 621 Gallery in Railroad Square, Tallahassee.Charles Hook was instrumental in the creation of the 621 Gallery and the Sculpture Garden. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the 621 Gallery Sculpture Garden or Big Bend Hospice in honor of Charles Hook.
