Obituary of Catherine-Shanley Carter


CARTER Catherine Shanley Carter of Hamden, wife of the late Francis W. Carter, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2003. She was the mother of the Rev. Francis T. Carter of St. BrigidEs Church in West Hartford, and Catherine Cowper of Milford; mother-in-law of Lawrence P. Cowper; grandmother of James Cowper of Arizona, Elizabeth Cowper of Branford, and Rebecca Cowper Moe and her husband, David, of Seattle; and a great-granddaughter, Kedzy Cowper Moe; sister of Mary Sweeney of New London, and Genevieve Smith of Woodbridge. Mrs. Carter was born in New Haven, August 4, 1910, daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Cannon Carter. She had taught in the New Haven school system for eight years and later taught in the Putnam Avenue School of Hamden for 20 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Academy and Notre Dame High School MotherEs Clubs, a 10-year volunteer at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and an active member of the North Haven Senior Center. Funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Avenue, Hamden, on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita Church at 10 a.m. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the McGivney Cancer Center, 1450 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06511.
