ALBANY Catherine Mary Hurley, 90, of Albany, died unexpectedly November 30, 2003 at St. Peter's Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Troy, N.Y. on July 31, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Cullen Hurley. Catherine was raised a lifelong resident of Albany. Catherine was a very positive, enthusiastic person. She was a self-directed woman who did what she felt was right. She shared her positive attitude with family, friends and all with whom she came in contact with. Catherine graduated from Vincentian Institute, Albany in 1931 and went to the College of St. Rose to study business. She graduated from St. Rose in 1935 and returned years later to receive her master's. She was the first of her six siblings to graduate from college. Her father had been a RPI graduate who believed in education. She was employed by Albany City School District for 23 years, retiring in June of 1976. She began her teaching career in 1952 as a kindergarten teacher at Our Lady Help of Christians. In 1953, she started teaching in the Albany City School District. She taught first and third grades and served in School #8 and #27. Her first employment was the WPA during the Great Depression. She always worked in her church, St. Teresa of Avila, doing fund raising, taking communion to shut-ins and helping in the church school, especially in the library as well as serving on the School Board and Parish Council. Catherine was an active volunteer at the Albany Institute of History and Art as a member of the Women's Council. She worked on the Luncheon Gallery and the Festival of Trees committees. She also worked as a hostess for the Albany Symphony's Vanguard show house and also donated 15 years working with St. Peter's Meals on Wheels. She was also an avid golfer, bowler and overall sports enthusiast. She traveled the world and visited six of the seven continents. She really enjoyed visiting Ireland. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Hurley Sr. in January of 1965. She was the beloved mother of Richard J. Hurley Sr. of Albany, Anne McKenna (William) of Md., Jane Thomas (Edward) of Middle Hope, N.Y., Margaret Reilly of Pa., Kathleen Kittleman (James) of Albany, and the late Joseph F. Hurley Jr.; mother-in-law of Anne Blanchard (Paul) and the late Mary Ann Hurley and Robert Anderson; sister of Reverend Daniel A. Hurley, OFM of St. Bonaventure University and the late Alice, Charles, John and Robert Hurley; sister-in-law of Marie Hurley and Mary Hurley; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, thence to St. Teresa of Avila Church, Albany at 10:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Tuesday 3 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow the Mass at St. Peter's Cemetery, Troy.
