Catherine M. Barnes, 59, of Wampsville, recently of Freeville, N.Y., died at the home of her sister in Oneida on Feb. 7, 2012. She was born in Syracuse to Harry J. and Eileen A. Northway. She grew up in Jamesville and was a 1971 graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School. She received an associate's degree in secretarial science at Powelson Business Institute and was employed for over 30 years as a department secretary at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, retiring due to health issues.On Aug. 7, 2004, she was united in marriage to Steven J. Barnes of Freeville. This union was cut short by Steve's untimely death on March 10, 2010.Cathy was an avid camper and enjoyed many outdoor activities. She was a skilled photographer and used those skills to capture nature at its best. She also had been associated with Literacy Volunteers.Cathy is survived by her father, Harry J. Northway; brother and sister-in-law, James and Trudy Northway of Tullahoma, Tenn.; sister, Ellen Moyer of Oneida; sister, Christine Simpson of Syracuse; nieces, Kelly Link of Portland, N.Y. and Megan Northway of Charlotte, N.C.; stepson, Matthew Barnes of Cortland and sister and brother-in-law, Bob and Darla Krome of Johnson City, N.Y. She was predeceased by her mother, Eileen A. Northway in 1989 and sister, Mary Alice Baker in 2004. A funeral service for Catherine M. Barnes, 59, of Wampsville, will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY 13205. Burial will be Saturday, 2 p.m. in Willow Glen Cemetery, 2090 Dryden Road, Dryden, NY 13053. Calling hours will be held Friday, 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
