Obituary of Carroll-L. Smith


Carroll L. Smith, 79 BIDDEFORD -- Carroll L. Smith, 79, of Biddeford, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Southern Maine Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Bangor, the son of Hugh C. and Gertrude McCarron Smith. He was educated in Bangor and Portland, graduating from Portland High School in the Class of 1947 and attended Gray's Business College, one of the two youngest attendees at that time. Carroll enlisted in the Air Force serving his country for 20 years. On Oct. 19, 1947, he married the love of his life, J. Rachel Petrin at the Holy Cross Chapel at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del. After retiring from military service he was employed with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for over 18 years where he had been regional manager. In his retirement he had volunteered his time to the AARP instructing seniors in safe driving skills. He was a life member of the Biddeford-Saco Elks Lodge and had called bingo there for many years. He enjoyed reading, especially World War II history and had read every W.E.B. Griffin book. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, J. Rachel Smith of Biddeford; one son, Richard H. Smith and his wife Carrie-Ann of Portland, one daughter, Anna Marie Nagy and her husband Roger of Alfred; and five grandchildren. Visiting hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Anne's Chapel (St. Joseph's Church, Parish of the Good Shepherd) in Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Biddeford. If so desired, donations in Carroll's memory may be made to the St. Joseph's Church Restoration Campaign or to a Charity of one's choice.
