On Wednesday, June 17, Mother Carrie Kent Brown, 86, took wings and flew away to be with the Lord. Mother Kent Brown was born Sept. 23, 1923, to the late Mr. Henry Brown and the late Mrs. Lucille Brown in Walterboro, S.C. She grew up and attended school in Bryan County. She met and married the late Mr. George W. Kent. To this union were born 10 children, four or whom, Johnnie Kent, George Kent Jr. Herbert Kent and Mary Griffin, preceded her in death. Mother Kent, also called Ms. Carrie and Evangelist Brown, was a mother, friend-mentor and political motivator to many. She served as a charter council member of the city of Walthourville appointed by Gov. Jimmy Carter and was mayor of Walthourville. She served her community for 25 years. She was also an ordained (licensed) evangelist of the Aisle of Hope Holiness Church Unto the Lord. She is loved and will be truly missed by all who knew her. Cherishing her memory are her daughters, Marsha (Larry) Johnson of Syracuse, N.Y., Vickie Byrd of Pembroke, Irm Gene (Willie) Thomas of Augusta, Carrie (Virgil) Nesbitt of Walthourville; two sons, Henry (Tomekia) Kent of Augusta and Michael (Belinda) Kent of Walthourville; one adopted gradndaughter, Sadetris Gross; two brothers, Jerome (Dorothy) Brown of Binginton, N.Y., and Joe Brown of Maryland; a sister, Jewell Hatchel of Louisville, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Mildred Simmons of Pembroke; 44 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of sorrowing relatives, friends and loved ones. Homegoing services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bradwell Institute gym. Viewing will be 6-7 p.m. Monday at Aisle of Hope Holiness Unto the Lord Church. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
