Carol-N. Dunn, born in 1999, spouse of Richard Dunn, mother of Sheila, Penelope, Michael, Karen and Shawn Charles, died on December 13, 2014 at 15 years old.
Dunn, Carol N. Dec. 13, 2014 Carol Anita Newman Dunn passed away on Saturday, December 13th, 2014. A lifelong artist and world traveler. Carol was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. She spent her childhood in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil. While in Sao Paulo, Carol attended a French Convent school and became fluent in French along with Portuguese and English. She came to the United States when she was 15. She graduated from Smith College in Northampton, MA and then also pursued further studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R I. While there she met her future husband, Richard Dunn, while waitressing at the University Club. In a famous family story, Mr. Dunn fired her for dropping a tray full of dishes, but still asked her out on a date. Apparently, Mr. Dunn saw in Carol what many of her friends came to enjoy - her vivacious spirit, enjoyment of life, warmth, and loving nature. During their marriage, the Dunns traveled extensively and lived in many different locations as part of a generation's long tradition of family hotel management tracing the historic resort route from summers in New England to winters in Florida. Carol brought her cosmopolitan grace to every location, a special favorite was the Gasparilla Inn on Boca Grande which her husband, Richard, managed. Carol taught art at Venice High School in Venice, FL during the early 60's and later at Matthew Whaley School in Williamsburg, VA during the late 60's. The Dunns moved to Sarasota in 1970 after acquiring Coquina on the Beach hotel on Lido Beach. Carol fell in love with Sarasota and the community often referring to Sarasota as 'the art and cultural center of Florida.' Carol's favorite place in Sarasota and in the world for that matter was her cabana at Turtle Beach on Siesta Key. After the Dunns divorced, Carol continued to travel and see the world, she enjoyed spending time with her children and the great joy of her later life was her two grandsons, Wes and Tristan. She loved speaking French with Tris and sharing in the academic and athletic success of Wes as both boys grew into fine young men. She is survived by her beloved son, Shawn Charles Dunn and his wife, Karen O'Connell, her adored grandsons, Wes and Tristan Dunn, and her nephews Nicholas Newman and Anthony Newman and her niece Sarah Harding-Newman. She was the mother of the late Michael Dunn, Penelope Dunn and Sheila Dunn. Also surviving is Carol's cat, Charlie, who will miss his friend. There will not be a funeral, but a memorial service in January. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cat Depot, 2542 17th St, Sarasota, FL 34234.
