->BREWER and ORRINGTON - With family by his side, Carlton Edward King, 87, went to be with his heavenly Father on Feb. 7, 2014. He was married 67 years to Rosemary Edith King who predeceased him on Dec. 10, 2013. Carlton was born March 22, 1926, the son of Maurice C. King and Eudora Etta (Leighton) King.Carlton served his country in the Army 1944-46, having fought at the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was honorably discharged from the 99th Infantry Division, 924th Field Artillary Battallion with Good Conduct and Victory medals. He continued to serve in the Army National Guard for six years.Carlton once advised a nephew who was about to leave for basic training to, "Learn your job, do your job to the very best of your ability, and don't expect someone else to do it for you." That was Carlton, that is how he lived his life, and that is one of the life lessons he passed on to his family.Through his strength of character and example, he lived life honorably and inspired others to do the same. His commitment to improving the lives of others was evident as he supported his community in service and leadership roles in Ralph J. Pollard Masonic Lodge, Anah Temple Shrine, and Enterprise Grange No. 173. He has 50 years of perfect attendance in the Brewer Kiwanis and is a past Lieutenant Governor of the New England District of Kiwanis International. He and Rosemary were very active supporters of Eastern Maine Friends of Retarded Citizens where their developmentally disabled daughter attended school. Carlton, with the Brewer Kiwanis, devoted untold hours to the building and furnishing of Camp Sunrise, a summer camp for special needs children. As owner of Maurice C. King Insurance Agency in Brewer, Carlton was active in the Brewer Chamber of Commerce and served 18 years as president of the Brewer Economic Development Corporation.Carlton was a music man who played the coronet in high school, bugle in the Anah Temple Drum and Bugle Corps, and drums in the Anah Temple Band. His "spoons" provided percussion for many a campfire sing-along. Carlton's easy manner and quirky wit delighted all who knew him. Many of his friends and family can recite his jokes verbatim - a result of hearing them repeated many times each year.He enjoyed ice fishing on East Grand Lake, deer hunting, and in earlier years snowmobiling. Camping with friends and family was a lifelong joy. Roseanne kept him young at heart.Surviving are three children, David King and his wife, Miriam, of Brewer, Pamela Ware and her husband, Richard, of Brewer, and Roseanne Beth King of Brewer; three grandchildren, Andrew King and his wife, Rita, of New York City, Adam King and his wife, Nahisha, of Brewer, and Michael King and his fiancée, Asheley Curless, of Portland; four stepgrandchildren, Jennifer MacDonald of Hampden, Charles Ware and his wife, Holly, Bruce Ware and his wife, Jill, and Clifford Ware and his wife, Veronica, all of California; three great-grandchildren, Carmen Marie King, Lowell David King, and David Joseph King; two sisters, Alice (King) Provost of Brewer, and Elizabeth (King) and her husband, Robert Masse, of New Hampshire; a brother-in-law, Roland Chesley of Litchfield; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
