Obituary of Cynthia-G. Brown

BROWN--Cynthia Granger, of NYC and Sherman, CT (May 24, 1952 - May 12, 2013). A daughter of the late Helen Niblack McKelvie and the late Charles E Brown III, Cynthia's work as a Congressional aide, free-lance journalist and editor led her to join Americas Watch in 1981. She did field work in combat zones and prisons in Central and South America, ending with a two year stay in Chile, 1990-1992. Upon her return she worked for Human Rights Watch at their headquarters in New York. She became their first program director from 1994 until her retirement in 1999. During this time she was instrumental in creating a new division for women's rights. Although she remained involved with HRW, the focus of her last years was on study, travel, landscape gardening, jazz singing and, especially, the practice of Buddhism. She is survived by her daughter Emilia Rafaela Barrios-Brown, her sisters Austi Brown of Kent, CT and Lucy Tower of Saratoga Springs, NY, niece Aurora Tower and nephew Alfred Tower. Her husband, Jaime Barrios, died in 1989. A memorial for Cynthia will be held on June 4th at Soho House (29 Ninth Avenue) at 11:30am. Donations may be sent to Still Mind Zendo (37 W 17th St # 6W, NY, NY 10011 ) or Naromi Land Trust (P.O. Box 265, Sherman, CT 06784).
