CHARLOTTE VAUGHAN (WEATHERLY) DAVIS - FERRISBURGH - Char Davis passed away peacefully in the Vermont Respite House on Feb. 27, 2015, after a period of declining health. She was born in Boston, Mass., May 25, 1928, the daughter of the late Evelyn (Chase) and Vaughan Weatherly. Vaughan, an early aviator working for Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, was killed in a plane crash just weeks before her birth. Her mother remarried in 1933, to Joseph Oren Rice of Morristown, Tenn. He was the only father Charlotte ever knew. His favorite nickname for her was "Dutch." Charlotte grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., and graduated from Ridgewood High School. Summers were spent at her grandmother Mary Chase's home in West Newbury, Mass., where she worked at the Newburyport Hytron Radio and Electronics Co. during W.W.II. Char graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Va. From there, she went on to study illustration at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. While in Philadelphia, she met Robert Lipp Davis, a University of Pennsylvania graduate. They were married at Valley Forge, Pa., on Nov. 17, 1951. During their marriage, they lived in Havertown, Pa., Thornwood, N.Y., Cos Cob, Conn., and Londonderry and Ferrisburgh, Vt. They moved to Shelburne Bay Senior Living in 2012. They had one son, Robert L. Davis Jr. Char was a homemaker and a proud volunteer with the American Red Cross. She loved various arts and crafts, gardening, reading, raising sheep, skiing, cooking, and caring for the family antiques and heirlooms. Loving history, she and husband, Bob, purchased the original 1792 Dakin Homestead in Ferrisburgh in 2002, when they moved from Londonderry to be closer to family. Charlotte loved driving and touring, never staying still for very long. It was a great loss to Char when she could no longer drive. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert L. Davis Sr. of Shelburne; son, Bob Davis and wife, Monica Sargent, and their daughter, Alice Vaughan Davis, and two step-grandchildren, Gabe and Sam Coleman, all of Burlington. Also surviving Charlotte are her sisters, Orelyn Emerson of Jericho, and Mary Lynn Dundas and husband, Richard, of Palo Alto, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Dodi Davis of Islandia, N.Y. She was fond of her nieces, Laurie Emerson, Ellie Emerson Brady, and Jennifer Davis Martin; nephew, Michael Dundas; and great-nieces and nephew, Emma Brady, Julia, Annalise, and Harrison Martin. Bob and Char stayed in touch with many longtime friends and neighbors throughout their life, always remembering their special occasions. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers-in-law, Shad Emerson and Fred Davis; and nephew, Rick Davis. A memorial service will be held in the spring and details will be announced at that time. Many thanks to Dr. Stephen Baad, his dog, Indigo, and the team at GoodHEALTH, the dedicated and caring staff at Shelburne Bay Residence, and the Visiting Nurses Association for their caring service. Donations may be made to a local VNA or American Red Cross. The family invites you to share your memories and condolences by visiting www.awrfh.com.
