Obituary of Carolyn-Gail Johnson


WAYNE -- Carolyn Gail (Hescock) Johnson passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Nov. 1, at the Balsam House in Readfield, where she had been receiving care for the past month.She was born and raised in Rochester, N.H., where she met and married Robert "Cap" Johnson, the love of her life. She was a beautiful woman with an unassuming personality, endless levels of energy and always giving to others. She will be remembered by her family, friends and anyone fortunate to have known her as a lady of grace and dignity. She carried this demeanor to the end of her life.Carolyn was born in Rochester, N.H., on Dec. 6, 1931. She graduated from Spalding High School in 1950 and married "Cap" when he returned from the Korean War in 1954. Their journey took them through several states beginning in the South and ending in the town they considered home, Wayne. She was a homemaker and wonderful mother to her daughters, and grandmother to her grandchildren. When time allowed she engaged in other endeavors that included gardening, selling real estate, running The Country Caterer, working part-time at The World Over in Lewiston and at Mr. Market in Winthrop. She dedicated countless hours to a variety of organizations, including The Cohen Center, Camp Sunshine, hospice, Wayne Elementary School and town groups. She welcomed any opportunity to open her house in Wayne, or "Camp Sugarloaf," to host friends or family.She was predeceased by her husband, "Cap," her parents, John and Elisabeth Hescock, and her younger brother, John. She will always be remembered by her daughters and their husbands, Tena and Dale Hinds, of Wayne, Kim and Curtis Spencer, of Wayne, and Kris and Rick West, of Cape Elizabeth; her grandchildren, of whom she was very proud, Andrew Hinds and his girlfriend, Tammy Gordon, Katie and Dean Pepper, Jonathan Hinds, Christina Spencer, Casey Spencer, Robert West and Allyson West; and great-grandchildren, Arianna Gordon, Mason and Julianna Pepper. She is also survived by her brother, Bruce Hescock and his wife, Janet, of Connecticut; and her sister-in-law, Linda Hescock, of New Hampshire.Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Wayne Community Church. Following the service, friends are invited to join Carolyn's family in honor of her life at her home on 19 Coolidge Road in Wayne.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Androscoggin Lake Association, P.O. Box 307, Wayne 04284, the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, 29 Lowell St., Fifth Floor, Lewiston 04240, or The Balsam House, 256 Gordon Road, Readfield 04355Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
