TRENTON - C. Donald Jennings departed this life on Sunday, June 19, 2011, at the Mill House Care Center. He was 94 years old.Donald Jennings was born to Lillian Augusta Houston-Jennings and Charles W. Jennings on Dec. 16, 1916, in Bayonne. The family later moved to Pennington, where Donald attended the Pennington public school system, and graduated from Central High School of Hopewell Township, class of 1935.Mr. Jennings was employed at the Belle Meade Army Depot, The Medical Center at Princeton, and the N.J. Dept. of Motor Vehicles Inspection Station, Bakers Basin, from which he retired.Donald was a lifelong member of Bethel AME Church, Pennington, where he worshipped the Lord faithfully. He served the church in many roles, including the trustee board, Sunday school superintendent, served as church organist for 72 years, and was honored at Bethel's 190th anniversary.Donald was recognized in 2005 by Trenton BIBS (Black Infant Babies Survival) as an adoptive grandfather. He was also named "Grandfather of the Year" by the Union Industrial Home for Children.He was a member of the Urban League Guild of Union County - Trenton Chapter.On Oct. 28, 1993, Donald married Edith Savage. The wedding party included Coretta Scott King as maid of honor. Civil rights icon, Rosa Parks, represented the bride's family. He became good friends with Coretta, who referred to him as her brother. During his illness several years ago, she would often talk and pray with him over the phone. Mr. Jennings was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 52 years, Evangelist Euwanda B. Jennings, and beloved son, Donald J. Jennings. He is survived by his loving wife, Edith Savage-Jennings of Trenton; sons, Wynn A. Jennings of Omaha, Neb. and James C. Jennings (and wife, Maxine) of Lawrenceville, Stephan L. Savage of Bound Brook; daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Jennings; grandchildren, Renee, William, Wynn Jr., Euwanda, Donald (and wife, Yvette) of Omaha, Neb., Jared of Trenton, Shana (and husband, Clifford) of Ewing; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; niece, Sally Ann Kornegay of Morrisville, Pa.; nephews, Thomas Parker (and wife, Joanne), Lawrence Parker (and wife, Shirleen) of Princeton; a special friend, Mary Klahn of Omaha, Neb.; numerous cousins, and a host of friends.Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Bethel AME Church, 246 S. Main St., Pennington, with a musical tribute beginning at 7 p.m. Calling hours continue Friday at 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at the Greater Mount Zion AME Church, 42 Pennington Ave., Trenton. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel AME Church, 246 S. Main St., Pennington, NJ 08534.Arrangements are by Anderson Funeral Service, Trenton.
