OBITUARY BILL ANDERSON Ninety-nine, passed away on December 5, 2008 at his home in Brewster Massachusetts. He was a wonderful father to his sons, Jon (Pamela), of Chicago, and Derek (Josie), of Montreal. Greatly loved by his grandchildren; Ashley (Alex), Anthony (Eve), Abra (Jeremy), Tim (Karen), Jeff (Barbara), and Greg (Dianne); eight great-grandchildren; his extended family; and many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy in 1993, and a grandchild, Jon Jr. (Christina), who died in 1999. Born in Montreal on December 27, 1908, Dad was raised on the grounds of Henry Joseph where his grandfather had a position as a landscape gardener. The mansion was torn down in 1912, to make way for an electric railroad tunnel under Mount Royal to Montreal's northern suburbs. As a young man, he worked as a runner at the Montreal Stock Exchange, then as a salesman, and later president, of Provincial Cotton & Fibre. At the start of World War II, he formed Smith-Anderson & Co., a waterfront manufacturing firm that made hatch covers, rope ladders, flags and other marine necessities for ships putting into the port of Montreal. Beginning in the late 1940s, Anderson family vacations were to Cape Cod and in 1968, Mom and Dad moved there permanently. Avid bridge players, photographers, and gardeners, they rapidly made many new friends. Dad later joined First Parish Brewster, the nearby Unitarian Universalist church. Dad was well known and loved by a wide variety of people. Planning a surprise party for his nintieth birthday, neighbours secretly copied his address book and invited everyone in it, a list that ranged from librarians to people who helped trim his hedges and keep his lawn neat. Most of them came and Dad overcame his surprise well enough to entertain the crowd by reciting from memory his favourite, though lengthy, poem, Albert and the Lion. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, December 12, 2 p.m. at Collins Clarke, 5610 Sherbrooke Street, followed by a reception at 640 Murray Hill, Westmount. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill Anderson, to Dans La Rue, Sun Youth, or an organization of your choice would be appreciated.
