Obituary of Beverly Stevens

Beverly Stevens Waite, 93 PITTSFIELD -- Beverly Stevens Waite, 93, died on April 5, 2012 in Pittsfield. She was born at home in Lexington, Mass. on August 18, 1918, daughter of Damon Bryant and Abby (Wellman) Stevens. Educated in the Lexington public schools, she took a post-graduate year at the Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, Maine. She graduated from Wheaton College (Norton, Mass.) in the Class of 1940. She was the wife of the late Richard A. Waite, III, who died in 1964. After her husband's death, she became secretary for 20 years to the late Herbert W. Grover, MD, of Altamont, N.Y. She wrote the nature column 'On-the-Wing' for the Albany, NY Knickerbocker News from 1967 to 1977. Prior to leaving New York State for Maine, she established 'Waitecliff' as a Nature Conservancy preserve along the Helderberg Escarpment west of Albany. Beverly was a prolific learner. From her girlhood, she was a passionate birder. Throughout her life, she loved the outdoors, tended her flower gardens, and enjoyed stargazing with her binoculars and birding scope. She reluctantly hung up her snowshoes in her late seventies. She was an avid collector of miniatures and antique glassware. For years, she was a fan of the Saturday Afternoon at the Opera broadcasts from the Met. She always had a book going, was happiest with a cat in her lap, and worked the newspaper crossword puzzle every day, including the day she died. Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Paul Wellman Stevens; and her stepdaughter, Mary Waite Carr. She is survived by her son, Richard A. Waite, IV, and his wife, Doreen, of Pittsfield, her daughter, Deborah W. Cappello, and her husband, Carl, of Cumberland Center, her stepdaughter, Sarah H. Waite, of Portland; her grandchildren; and great-grandchild. At her request, there will be no funeral service or visitation hours. The family will gather privately in the summer on Monhegan Island to celebrate her life. Arrangements under the care and direction of Dan & Scott's Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan. Contributions in her memory may be made to: The Nature Conservancy 4245 North Fairfax Drive Suite 100 Arlington, VA 22203-1606 Beverly Stevens Waite
