Obituary of Betty-Rogers Gray

Untitled BETTY ROGERS GRAY FEBRUARY 12, 1921 - SEPTEMBER 5, 2009 Mrs. Betty Rogers Gray died on September 5, 2009 in Pensacola, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Rear Admiral Oscar Gray, Jr., Medical Corps USN. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas to Ora and Thomas Tapscott Rogers, Betty was the youngest of ten children. She married Oscar Gray, Jr., also of Little Rock, who became a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy. During her life as a navy wife, Betty was an active volunteer in such organizations as the Gray Ladies, the Red Cross, Navy Relief, and many others. Despite being legally blind, Mrs. Gray continued to live independently and actively after her husband's death in 1992. She loved to cook, entertain her family and friends, and "read" with her talking books on tape, provided by the Independence for the Blind through the West Florida Library System. She was always meticulous in her appearance and her manner and never complained about her situation. She was very humble about her accomplishments and abilities. Mrs. Gray is survived by her four children: Oscar Gray III and his wife Karen of Prescott, Arizona; Thomas Michael Gray and his wife Cecily of Berkeley, California; Rebecca Gray Yonge and her husband Henry of Pensacola; Lee Tapscott Gray and his wife Kathleen of Gainesville, Florida; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent health care provided by Dr. Quintin Law and the caring nurses and staff at Gulf Breeze Hospital. There will be a memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 12th at 1:00 p.m. with a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to Christ Church Parish, 18 West Wright Street, Pensacola, FL 32501 or to the Independence for the Blind of West Florida, 7201 N. 9th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
