Betty Pierce Brown, "Becky", aged 92, passed away September 26, 2012 at Brattleboro (VT) Memorial Hospital. A long time Greenfield Massachusetts resident, she was born February 16, 1920, Betty Louise Pierce, in her maternal grandparent's home in Greenwood, Massachusetts, to Dr. Abijah Davenport Pierce and Florence Stewart Pierce. Within a year, the young family moved to Madison Circle in Greenfield where her younger brother, Stewart Wayne Pierce, was born. Her father had an orthodontic practice on Federal and later School streets for more than fifty years. Summers were spent on their farm in Marlow, NH and at an aunt's, Susanne Fidelia Pierce, Brant Rock cottage on Cape Cod. Being very tall, she was a star for Greenfield High School's basketball team, was on the yearbook staff, and graduated in 1937; when she went to Wheaton College in Norwood, Mass; graduating in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in Art History. It was at Wheaton, where she met lifetime close friend, Norma Louise Dickey. They both hated their shared middle name, Louise, so decided to call each other, "N. or B. Louse", respectively. While visiting home from Tilton, one weekend, her younger brother introduced her to his roommate, Jerome Potter Brown. They were married August 19, 1944 in Albany, NY while "Jerry" was home on a furlough from the army where he was stationed at a hospital in Alaska. Years later, they named their first daughter, "Candy", for the red and white, candy striped dress she was wearing when they met.After her husband was killed in a single engine plane crash in 1960 in Springfield, VT; she went back to school and earned a teaching degree from Keene State College. She taught at Turners Falls High School, (MA) , for many years. Becky was passionate about early American history and crafts, art, classical music, singing, scouting, photography, genealogy, traveling the world, gardening, knitting, teaching, the outdoors, and created a huge assortment of incredible expressions of those passions throughout her life: from gorgeous gardens to a tree farm to magical sewn Christmas elves to outrageous sweaters to a mountain of genealogical work. She was predeceased by her brother, Stewart, and by her husband, Jerry.She is survived by all five of her children; Merritt Brown of West Chesterfield, NH, Candace Brown of Putney, VT, Brooks Brown of West Halifax, VT , Heather Smith of Guilford, VT, and Rebecca Brown of Greenfield, MA, ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, nine nephews and nieces, and sixteen great nephews and nieces.Contributions in Becky's memory can be made to Vernon Home, 61 Greenway Dr., Vernon, VT 05354.Relatives and friends will be invited to a celebration of her life later this fall; details will be announced upon determination.
