Betty Jane Smith, 83, passed away on May 1, after succumbing to cancer. She was born in Springfield on November 2, 1925, the only child of Otto and Agnes Young. Betty attended Lakeview Elementary School and graduated from Willard High School in 1943. Following high school, Betty attended Draughon's Business College and worked for several years as a secretary. While working at Powell Brothers' Truck Line, she met her husband, Rex Smith. They were married on August 26, 1945. Together, they started Rex Smith Propane Company in 1960, on the corner of Kearney and West Bypass, where Betty continued to work until her recent illness. In 1983, Betty began a special friendship with Frank Wadlington. Together, they enjoyed raising catfish on Frank's farm in Diggins, Missouri and traveling in their motor home during the winter months. She also liked heated political discussions, working at her gas station and visiting with the customers, tending her flower gardens, feeding the birds, and being with her dog, Buster. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rex in 1976; and Frank Wadlington in 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Richardson and husband, Ken of Springfield, Mo.; a son, Gary Smith of Springfield, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Alex Smith. A graveside service will be held in Smith Cemetery in Rogersville, Mo. on May 4 at 4 p.m. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., May 3 in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
