HARRIS, "Betty" Elizabeth Catherine (nee Simpson) August 28, 1913 – March 20, 2013 Betty was born in Cochrane, Alberta to a pioneering family who settled in the Foothills of the Rockies in the Valley of the Bow. Every day she thanked Grandma Gillies for choosing to settle near the Ghost River. Betty grew up in Cochrane and completed her high school at the St. Mary's Convent in Calgary. Betty was deeply devoted to her family and influenced by the experience of growing up in a thriving ranching community, where the Simpson family were active in the community and church. She was instilled with a deep love of her heritage and a lifelong commitment to her faith. Betty married Allan Milton Harris and they enjoyed a long marriage during which they maintained strong connections with family and friends. They enjoyed travelling, especially their many trips to Hawaii. Betty's proudest achievement was being a mother to three sons as well as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a long-time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, The Catholic Women's League, Columbus 55 Plus Club, the Renfrew 50 Plus Club and the Southern Alberta Pioneers. In her last years, Betty lived at Bethany Care Centre where she enjoyed the caring support of staff and the opportunity to make many new friends. Betty was predeceased by Allan on September 26, 1989. Celebrating her life are beloved sister Theresa Martin, her children Brian and Darlene Harris, James Harris and Maureen Leyland, Larry Harris and Diane Kirton; six grandchildren: Pamela, Jeff, Ryan, Megan, Jonathan and David, two great-grandchildren Tristan and Kaleb, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was also predeceased by her parents William John Simpson and mother Mary Elizabeth Gillies and six brothers: Jim, Don, Alex, Ed, Bill, Duncan. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 - 24 Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.hffs.com.
