Betty Pierce Brown 1920 - 2012 Betty Pierce Brown, "Becky," 92, passed away Sept. 26, 2012, at Brattleboro (VT) Memorial Hospital. A longtime Greenfield, Mass., resident, she was born Feb. 16, 1920, Betty Louise Pierce, in her maternal grandparent's home in Greenwood, Mass., to Dr. Abijah Davenport Pierce and Florence Stewart Pierce. Within a year, the young family moved to Madison Circle in Greenfield where her younger brother, Stewart Wayne Pierce, was born. Her father had an orthodontic practice on Federal and later School Streets for more than 50 years. Summers were spent on their farm in Marlow, N.H., and at an aunt's, Susanne Fidelia Pierce, Brant Rock cottage on Cape Cod. It was at Wheaton where she met lifetime close friend, Norma Louise Dickey. They both hated their shared middle name, Louise, so decided to call each other, "N. or B. Louise," respectively. While visiting home from Tilto one weekend, her younger brother introduced her to his roommate, Jerome Potter Brown. They were married Aug. 19, 1944, in Albany, N.Y., while "Jerry" was home on a furlough from the Army where he was stationed at a hospital in Alaska. Years later, they named their first daughter "Candy" for the red and white candy-striped dress she was wearing when they met. After her husband was killed in a single engine plane crash in 1960 in Springfield, VT, she went back to school and earned a teaching degree from Keene State College. She taught at Turners Falls High School (MA) for many years. Becky was passionate about early American history and crafts, art, classical music, singing, scouting, photography, genealogy, traveling the world, gardening, knitting, teaching, the outdoors, and created a huge assortment of incredible expressions of those passions throughout her life, from gorgeous gardens to a tree farm to magical sewn Christmas elves to outrageous sweaters to a mountain of genealogical work.
