Bette Jeanne Davis Tehachapi, California Bette Jeanne Davis passed away peacefully in her home on March 11, 2012. She is survived by her loving husband of 15 years, Matt Graham; along with her siblings, Dotty Davis, Scottsdale, AZ, Alice Davis, Scottsdale, AZ, Harry John Davis (Lauren), New Hartford, NY, Suzanne DeJoseph (Bob Andrade), Youngstown, NY, Barbara Bromley (Steve), Gilbert, AZ, and William Davis (Karen), Olympia, WA. Also surviving her are her three Labrador Retrievers, Sabaka, Lucky and Aspen. She was preceded in death by her parents. Bette was born in New Hartford, New York, in 1951, to Dr. Harry John and Alice Margaret Davis, on her dad's birthday. Bette lived the majority of her life in California. She was known for her zest for life and her love for everything, especially her Labradors (currently three) and flying. She restored her own single engine airplane, and when she was not flying an airplane, she was jumping out of one. She graduated high school in 1968 and worked for her dad prior to coming to California. She earned A.A. and A.S. degrees from Chabot College, then came a B.S. in Chemistry from CSU Hayward in 1974, and next working for Shaklee Corp. as a chemist. In the mid '70s, she started flying. It was a passion; she restored her own small airplane. She flew everywhere and also jumped free-fall over 400 jumps. In 1981, she went to Oregon for a visit. While there, she loaded her niece Barbie in the airplane to fly to a meeting of lady pilots. On the way back, they crashed. Bette was burned horribly, and Barbie, too, was burned badly. Bette went through months of treatment in Oregon, then a flight back, and months of treatments and surgeries while staying with another sister. Giving up was not in her vocabulary. She decided not to be disabled and went back to school, moving to Fresno. She received an M.S. in Industrial Hygiene and worked as a contractor, first with NASA Ames, then with the National Labs in Hayward, and finally as a civil servant at NASA Dryden, which she retired from in 2008. She was a member of many professional organizations, including the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. She began seeing Matt in 1989. She moved to Tehachapi in 1996. They married in 1997. They had their dream house built in Tehachapi. Matt and Bette were devoted partners and also best friends. Her medical trials and tribulations never ceased, but she kept a positive attitude. Her interests included flying, sky diving, collecting stuffed dogs, collecting torn pottery, and breeding and raising dogs. She owned literally hundreds of T-shirts, lived in jeans, tees, sweats, shoes if necessary, but preferred slippers. Bette was a Trekkie. Her latest great passion was the dogs and their dock-diving. You could have a good conversation with her. She was a good listener and gave good advice. She had a passionate distaste for the mundane, and she lived her life with that philosophy. Life was lived at Mach 2 with her hair on fire. In temperance, charitable donations may be made to "Guiding Eyes for the Blind", "Paws with a Cause" or the "Tehachapi Humane Society". A memorial service was held on Thursday, March 15, at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel. Bette Jeanne Davis
