JOHNSON Bertha Johnson, age 71, of Bridgeport, passed into the peaceful rest with the Lord on July 26, 2009, surrounded by her devoted family. Bertha was born December 25, 1937 to the late Mose A. and Lizze Mae James, Sr. in Mobile Alabama. Bertha received her education in the Mobile school system. She and her husband of 53 years, Foster relocated to Bridgeport in 1963. She was employed by Felix Industries until they closed, at which time she began her own domestic engineering business. Bertha joined East End Baptist Tabernacle Church in 1964, immediately becoming involved with numerous auxiliaries such as, Church Chorus, Combined Choir, Inspirational Choir, Willing Workers and Missionaries. Bertha served as Women's Day treasurer, Captain, and Chairperson, in addition to revamping the Nursery Service and coordinating the annual fruit drive. In recent years Bertha was called to serve as a Deaconess where she worked diligently with the preparation of Baptism and Holy Communion. She prepared many meals as a cook for the supper program, for funerals and just for being someone who believed in Jesus' mandate to "feed the hungry". In addition to her husband, Foster Johnson, left to cherish her memory are daughters, Crystal Johnson and Anna Anderson (Bruce) of Bridgeport, Nikia Richmond (M.Sgt.,USAF Frederick) of Maryland; one grandson, Corey Richmond; four granddaughters, Shandra Faulk (Dwayne), Raven Casseus (Paul), Megan-Ashley Anderson and Kailen Richmond; one great- granddaughter, Gianna Casseus; three brothers, Mose James, Leo James (Roma Leen), Wille Lee James (Melvina); and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, July 31, 2009 at East End Baptist Tabernacle Church., 548 Central Ave. Bridgeport, with Rev. Cl. Stallworth officiating. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 am until time of service at the church. Interment at the convenience of the family.
