ROGERS Bernice Rogers, age 96 of Fairfield, died December 13, 2008. Born October 13,1912 in Providence, R.I., to the late Georgiana Marion Louise Nevue and Peter Francis Blanchard, she was the youngest of three children. Bernice graduated with honors from Commercial High School in Providence in 1931. She married her beloved husband Merrell Edward Rogers in 1939. While Merrell served in the army in Hawaii during World War II, Bernice lived in Florida with her mother and worked for Pan Am. Bernice and Merrell moved to Warwick, Rhode Island in 1950 and then to Stratford, in 1959, where they lived for 40 years. They joined Stratford Baptist Church where Bernice taught Sunday Scholl, sang in the choir and served on many committees. She was a member of the Dorcas Circle. For 20 years Mrs. Rogers worked at J. William Hope and Company in Bridgeport as office manager and statistical typist, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Rogers is survived by her two daughters, Joyce Dixon Rich and her husband, Kenneth of Shelton, and Meredith Rogers Cherland and her husband, Carl. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Elizabeth Rogers Cherland and her husband, Rev. Kent Narum on Custer, SD and Benjamin Rogers Cherland of New York City; and by one great-grandson, Elijah. Mrs. Rogers entered the Jewish Home for the Elderly in 1999 and was well cared for and loved by their highly competent staff. Special thank you to Dr. Covey, Tunisha, Shaneen, Maria, Deena, Anna, Nancy, Sandy, Sammy, Barbara, Jennifer, and everyone there who made her passing bearable. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Stratford Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Genevicz officiating. Burial will be held privately in Union Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Monday, December 15, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Dennis & D'Arcy Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford.
