Bernard F. ChartrandFormer Mayor of the city of Fitchburg; 87 FITCHBURG -- Bernard F. Chartrand, 87, of Fitchburg, MA, passed away peacefully Thursday morning October 10, 2013, in Sterling Village, Sterling MA.He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary (Langille) Chartrand; four sons, Kevin Chartrand and his wife, Randi of Princeton, MA, Richard "Dick" Chartrand and his wife, Mary Ellen of Leominster, MA, Mark Chartrand and fiancée, Audrey of Leominster, MA, and John Chartrand and his wife, Wendy of Leominster, MA; one daughter, Joan Peters and her husband, Lee of Royalston, MA; three step-children, Edmund Langille of Leominster, MA, Elizabeth Langille of Knoxville, TN, and Margaret Moshinski of Hillsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Thomas of New Ipswich, N.H., and Dorothy Bourque of Charlotte, N.C.; his son-in-law, Richard Normandin of Westminster, MA; a sister-in-law, Connie Chartrand of Fitchburg, MA; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann (Shields) Chartrand in 1976, a daughter, Mary Normandin, in 2009, two brothers, John J. Chartrand and Robert L. Chartrand, and two sisters, Helen Grillo and Margaret Lavoie.He was born on December 25,1925 in Fitchburg, MA, the son of Louis and Mary (O'Leary) Chartrand and lived in Fitchburg all of his life. He attended and graduated from St. Bernard's High School and then attended and graduated from Becker Junior College.He worked at the former General Electric Co. in Fitchburg, MA for 35 years and retired in 1984 to serve as the Mayor of Fitchburg. Prior to serving as mayor, he spent many years with the Fitchburg city council. Bernie was a lifelong active Democrat.He was a 4th Degree member of the Joseph P. Keating Council #99, Knights of Columbus, a member of the Eastwood Club, The Elks Lodge #847, The Fitchburg Rotary Club, and the Fitchburg Art Museum. He was the past president and treasurer of the Fitchburg Little League, and was actively involved with the Boy Scouts.CHARTRAND -- The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg. Interment to follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
